FrieslandCampina sets out small-portion protein concepts for GLP-1 users

A 20 g protein shot in 100 ml gives R&D teams a concrete brief. The supplier specifications still need a comparison with what intended users finish and choose again.

FrieslandCampina Ingredients will show a 100 ml shot containing a stated 20 g of protein at SupplySide Global in Las Vegas. It is one of three concepts in its GLP-1 companion nutrition platform, outlined in a company announcement carried by Asia Food Journal on 16 October. Two further drinks sit in an adjacent protein-and-hydration range. Company announcement via Asia Food Journal

The expo runs from 28 to 30 October; the wider education programme starts on 26 October. These are forthcoming demonstrations, not evidence of consumer products already on sale. SupplySide Global

What is in the line-up?

The figures below are supplier-reported specifications. They describe the concepts, not measured consumption or a clinical result.

Platform Concept Protein Fibre Serving information
GLP-1 companion nutrition NutriSmooth Caramel Protein Shot 20 g Not stated 100 ml
GLP-1 companion nutrition Protein NutriBites 15 g 8 g Three pieces; mass not stated
GLP-1 companion nutrition Protein Harvest Soft Baked Grain Bar 14 g 3 g Bar; mass not stated

Protein and hydration Coconut Energy Protein Water 30 g Not stated Volume not stated

Source: the 16 October announcement. "Not stated" does not mean zero. Without the missing volumes, the 30 g drink cannot be ranked against the 20 g shot by concentration.

The shot combines whey and casein. The announcement also names Nutri Whey Isolate Clear PA, a pre-acidified whey ingredient, in its discussion of the adjacent clear-beverage concepts. That is not the protein system specified for the caramel shot.

A smaller serving still needs a comparison

Compact protein delivery predates this GLP-1 platform. In February 2021, FrieslandCampina described a medical-nutrition application with a stated 15 g of protein in 80 ml, equivalent to 18.75 g per 100 ml. That example is context, not a head-to-head test of either formulation. Protein shot family, 19 February 2021

The development question is therefore more useful than a novelty claim: does the proposed serving improve on an existing option for the intended user and eating occasion? Protein in the package is one part of that comparison. The amount someone finishes, the sensory experience and willingness to use it again are separate outcomes to test.

For R&D teams, a useful next brief would compare the concept with a relevant existing drink or snack under the intended conditions of use. Ask for processing and shelf-life data, including viscosity, physical stability and sensory results for the finished formulation. Where fibre is included, ask how the proposed serving has been assessed for tolerability in the intended users. A formulation specification alone cannot answer those questions.

The immediate signal is an expanding supplier development menu. The announcement does not establish which concept consumers will choose.
